THE BREAK POINT

Fritz Battling the Rhythm Breaker for the W

Hana Mandlíková made her name breaking rhythm, and Roberto Carballés Baena just tried the same trick on Taylor Fritz in Toronto. Mandlíková, a four-time major champion with 27 career titles, was famous for ending streaks. Her style? Loopy topspin, sudden pace changes, and net attacks that left even legends off balance.

Carballés, ranked No. 89, went full Mandlíková mode. He dragged Fritz, the world No. 4, into 17 rallies over 10 shots and yanked him off his baseline groove with high balls and soft drop shots. Fritz, who leads the ATP in first-strike points this year, spent much of the match swiping at shoulder-high forehands instead of dictating.

Carballés Breaking Fritz (C last word on sports)

But the rhythm-breaker blinked. Serving at 5-4 in the second, Carballés double-faulted to hand back the break. Fritz slammed the door with a 7-1 tiebreak, finishing with 32 winners to 19.

Mandlíková would have smiled at the chaos. Fritz survived it, and now he knows he’ll have to handle more of it if he wants the Toronto title.

The Scores in Fast-Forward Version

Gauff Coming in Hot (C GMA)

Gauff def. Kudermetova 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 – Kudermetova was cruising until Gauff attacked her second serve, breaking the baseline rhythm and turning defense into fearless first-strike tennis

Kostyuk def. Kasatkina 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4) – Kasatkina’s variety met Kostyuk’s bold acceleration in the breaker. The first-striker dared her to blink, and she did.

Etcheverry def. Cerúndolo 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 – Pure attrition. Etcheverry absorbed the heat, waited for backhand leaks, and stole it late.

The Quiet Truth Yesterday

Coco Gauff flipped the numbers. Down a set, she was landing only 52% of first serves and leaking double faults. But after a racquet twirl and a deep breath, she attacked Kudermetova’s second serve and won 12 of 15 return points in the final set. In Toronto’s chaos, the player who can reset under pressure turns the match in their favor.

Match

Frances Tiafoe vs Aleksandar Vukic – National Bank Open, Centre Court (6:40 PM BST

Andrey Rublev vs Lorenzo Sonego – National Bank Open, Centre Court (5:30 PM BST)

Naomi Osaka vs Jelena Ostapenko – National Bank Open, Centre Court (5:30 PM BST)

INSIGHT: Tiafoe brings heat; Vukic brings patience. If rallies cross 10 balls, the American’s focus will get stress-tested. Crowd energy tilts Big Foe’s way, but one loose service game and the grinder’s in

INSIGHT: Rublev swings like a sledgehammer, Sonego answers with slice, spin, and sneaky net rushes. First to shake the other’s rhythm runs the show.

INSIGHT: Osaka’s deep, steady ball meets Ostapenko’s roulette of winners and walkabouts. One mental dip and the scoreboard could flip fast.

Shots I’d Call My Bookie About

Firework meets wet cement. Tiafoe wins the short rallies (he takes 62% of points under 5 shots this season) and survives 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Sledgehammer vs Swiss Army knife. Rublev has hit 28 forehand winners in his last two matches and bludgeons through 6-4, 7-5.

Quiet wall vs chaos cannon. Osaka absorbs the heat; Ostapenko sprays errors on 40% of rallies past 7 shots, and Osaka strolls 7-5, 6-3.
